It starts with a memory. Me in the kitchen learning how to roll biscuits with my granny. My mother brushing through my thick hair with me wincing from the snap and crackle of the comb pulling tiny strands of tangled coils. My cousin passing me a popsicle on a hot summer day. I’m moved to put these memories into the world and through them I am greeted by cousins that have no blood relation, yet feel as if they were there right beside me through backyard parties and Christmas carols. My art is a conversation with kinfolk I could never reach otherwise. I am DeAnn Wiley. Artist. Storyteller. Connector.
